THE BALTIMORE MUSEUM OF ART

This needlepoint purse was inspired by the William Morris Textile "Rose".  By using a fabric with a large pattern that repeats we were able to fold the purse into three parts like an envelope and have the pattern match on the front of the purse where the scalloped flap closes.  The purse was finished with a cording detail around the outside edge. The design for the eyeglass case was taken from a William Morris altar cloth.  To add some interest to the back of the case we repeated the vines design but eliminated the flowers.

Designs Inspired by The Samuel Williams Album Quilt

This Baltimore Album Quilt is from the museum's permanent collection and was the inspiration for a collection of five needlepoint designs which included two pillow inserts, a pair of holiday ornaments, an eyeglass case, and a set of four coasters. Below are two examples of these kits.  The eagle with the flag can be used as a pillow insert or as framed artwork. The pair of ornaments had the perfect coloration to be sold as holiday ornaments.

WINTERTHUR MUSEUM

I had the pleasure of reviewing images from the entire Winterthur Collection. Below is an example of one of the items selected for interpretation. The challenge was to take these large plates and make them into small coasters without losing detail.  By taking away the wide outside border of the plate I was able to enlarge the needlepoint image.
